Log and Experiment

People like to say that the key is hard work. While hard work is certainly necessary for a successful venture in anything, I find there are two keys to success that many people fail to do, and thus fail overall. These two keys are: experimentation and tracking data.

No matter what your endeavor, it's always important to experiment and try new approaches. Constant and consistent tweaking will take your project both forward and backwards in tiny baby steps.

Then comes tracking data. With this, you can 95% ensure yourself which tweaks are taking you backwards, and which tweaks are taking you forward. Cut the bad tweaks, keep the good ones.

Such common sense right? Yet when's the last time you've seen more than a couple people do this at the gym? People don't like to do these steps because they require more hard work. And so we come full circle.  Also note that each practice is pretty useless without the other.

  1. It's so rare to find people who actually track and manage their data. It's sad, really.

  6. Another quality post, and I agree, without a new approach to doing things, you'll go bored.

  7. Tracking data is always my first move in any project. Whether it's a diet, eco-modding, or finance, keeping fastidious notes is always the best route to take.

  8. A lot of people don't like hard work and want everything handed to them. It's a shame really. Good post, I like your stuff a lot.

  9. I agree completely, and I think the reason most people don't track their data is because it seems overly difficult.
Also, what you track is really important. Finding what to track, and how to do it feasibly are the biggest obstacles.

  14. No discussion of this material is ever complete without the classic "be sure to think outside the box!"

  15. All of that is true. Tracking data is one of the most key traits of a successful business.
